A Beach Buddy Indeed

Sundays are very laid back and easy here. And by laid back, I mean we become lazy slobs.....after church of course. Church. People go to church for different reasons. It may be a way to escape from the kids for an hour or two (check), it may give you some time to spend with your spouse (check), maybe you go to church to see friends that you don't see during the week (check), or is it to get spiritual fuel for your upcoming week (check). If you are a family blessed with a special needs child or adult, you may find it difficult to attend church. Why? Well, for us, we would prefer Lizzy to not sit in the nursery with babies. Just because she wears a diaper and is spoon-fed doesn't classify her as a "baby". Plus, she has dignity. Second, we really can't take her into the service with us. She grunts, groans, and squeals so it would be a distraction. We constantly think would this disrupt others sitting around us? These are the very reasons these awesome families are unchurched. It's hard researching churches in your area finding one that suits all of your families needs. We have been blessed to have been at our church for three years. Our family LOVES IT! They have a special needs program called Beach Buddies! Be sure when you click the link that you watch the video on the program. It's amazing! There is someONE always there for Lizzy to play with. Our church is the only one in the area to have this program. It's wonderful and Damon and I are able to sit together in church enjoying our time "alone".  Most importantly, Lizzy enjoys it. To be honest, all a church really needs is an empty room and some volunteers each Sunday. It is just another class:-) Make it happen in your church folks!

I tried to get some pictures of Lizzy and I after church. Tried and failed miserably.

Take 1

Take 2....c'mon Lizzy, for real!
Take comes that tongue
Take 4......getting frustrated and gritting my teeth

Apparently Lizzy does better with pictures when she flies solo! I'm not sure what was so extremely funny in these pictures but I sure was glad she was wearing a diaper!!!!! Golly!

Happy Monday and have a great week friends! God Bless!

Old and New Adventures

Lizzy started school this week. She was super excited to get back.......I promise. Those were her exact words! Ok, so you got me......let me rephrase.......I was super excited to get her back! I walk in to the classroom and I see desks. Desks? I immediately think that we are no longer in the right class. Desks are for students to write and read at. Coloring. Desks are for individual learning. I was confused. I decided not to say anything and just see how it went this week. I figured I would check it out next week when Jack gets back to school. I am usually the parent that when I see something different, I ask why and if it will work for Lizzy. Desks! Go figure.

Pretty girl all ready for school. There is that tongue again.

Sweet kisses from Jack Jack before leaving for school.

I did something this week that I've never done. In the years that Damon has been coaching football, Lizzy has not gone to a single game. Now wait.......I have reasons. One of the biggest is that she is.........forget it.  I have no excuses for this. There are people that had no idea Damon was the father of three! They see Emily and Jack but never Lizzy. I told him that I would make an effort to get to some games this season.........WITH LIZZY! Can I leave the other two home? Ok, ok, I was kidding.

We get to the stadium early, as requested by Damon, and I immediately notice the handicapped parking spaces (2) are filled. Shoot. Now what? Really, Lisa? Park anywhere and get out! You have her stroller. You can't walk 1/16 of a mile to the gate?  As soon as I start looking for an open "regular" parking spot and man waves me down. Shoot, the heck does he want, I'm busy here.  I roll my window down, drop Coach Viele's name (seems like he is known everywhere), tell him about Lizzy, and he guides me to a parking spot right near the gate!

We had a fun time. Papa and Nana were there and helped me while I took some pictures. We did leave a little after half-time because there was school the next day. The game was moved to Thursday night because of Hurricane Irene.  Lizzy squealed (cheering) and giggled which made it easy on momma.

Lizzy, I love your daddy so much and am proud of the man he is!
A favorite toy and her sister. Life is good!
Nana and Lizzygirl
Our plan is to go back to Hilton Head, SC in October for more oxygen therapy and every month after that. We are really excited to get back and see Lizzy progress and develop more.

You may have noticed that I changed the title of her blog. I did this just so that I could blog about Lizzy's life more and not just the hyperbaric oxygen therapy itself. The web address didn't change. Thank you for following us and being faithful readers. God bless!

The Tongue and Funny Faces

I'm not sure what is going on with Lizzy lately, but her tongue has been making it's way into lots of photos.

And all of a sudden, as if a switch was flipped, she has started making faces or are they expressions?

Go ahead......laugh.......I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard!

I used to be the one making her giggle. Now, her expressions make me laugh. My daughter can make me laugh! Wow..........little blessings.

I'm busy getting things ready for school here. Emily has a list a mile long of supplies needed for FOURTH GRADE!  From journals to glue sticks (16 of them), she needs it all.  Lizzy's list is a bit different. Her list consists of diapers, wipes, seizure medicine, extra bibs and pants, food and apple juice. Quite a difference between a child entering the fourth grade and a special needs child. Lizzy has the same list every year.

Her school raised funds for a special needs playground last year and I will be blogging about it soon. Have a great night!

God bless!

A Needed Break

My mother and father in law are too good to me. The very day they returned from their vacation, they took Lizzy for me to give me a break. That was Friday and I just picked her up tonight! I got the whole weekend off! I so enjoyed my "freedom"! I know what you are thinking. Ah Lisa, you do have two other children.  Yes, I know I do. Lizzy is the baby and requires everything a "baby" does. She is completely dependent on us. She can do nothing for herself. I don't say this for pity sake........what the heck am I saying? Yes, I am. I get worn out and exhausted from caring for Lizzy day in and day out and I needed a break!  Believe it or not, Lizzy can wear on you. But, on the flip side, I missed that little girl so much. When she is with Nana, I tend to just get the important information that I need and then we don't communicate much. I know that she is having a good time and is very well cared for. So, I don't worry about her. Oh - and that "important" piece of information that I need is when she is coming home!

She missed me. She always does.

Lizzy trying to get me.

Now she wants a hug! Here she comes!
When we got in the car to go home, Emily says "Let's put on Lizzy's music." I was shocked but happy at the same time. Usually the other kids ask for a movie. But tonight was different. She wanted something she knew would make her sister happy! She was right. Lizzy loves her music and we enjoyed our ride home.

Have a great night. God bless!

Happy Girl

Lizzy is really happy! I mean she is loving life. She loves her ball pit probably as much she loves her momma! Here she is! Couple of things about the video......... I never hit her with a ball and I am sorry for my big mouth in it again. The toy shelf knocked over was........ummmmmm.......Lizzy. Yes, my sweet child destroyed the gym.

See her looking at me in the video? That's my girl. Want to see something else kind of cool?  How about Lizzy watching Barney on the iPad? I will need to get a gallon size zip lock bag so she doesn't drool all over it. I do this with my smartphone. Works great!

Pretty cool, huh? Barney is her favorite so the family has to deal with it. With Lizzy, her vision seems.....abnormal to us. Not something we are used to. So when she looks directly at us we get excited then a bit weirded out.  She can just hold a stare. Still have not seen any seizures for some time now and that is a blessing!  She has been off the Lupron shot for almost a year. We took her off because of a bone scan showing the beginnings of osteoporosis. That shot was keeping her cycle away. Yes, she had her period at 7! The endocrinologist has told us that we should see something within the year. YUCK! My reason for all of this is to say she has been developing quite a bit in the last two months. She will be 12 next month. It just seems hard for me to believe that I have a tween! So because of that we, as a family, have been watching The Wizards of Waverly Place on the Disney channel. I started watching it and secretly got the rest of the family watching. It's crazy awesome. I love it! This is the stuff Lizzy would be watching! I might get some Selena Gomez posters for her room! Yea, I'm gonna do that!

I am still writing articles for the CP Family Network and was asked to write one on siblings of kids with special needs and also traveling with a handicapped child. I have had lots of experience with the latter in the last two months. Please send me any suggestions on how you would encourage your child(ren) to play with Lizzy or a child like Lizzy! Thanks!

God Bless each one of you!

Hi friends! Thank you for praying for me. I see you.

Summertime here with Lizzy seems different. During school, she has someone with her all day. When a break happens and the kids are home, she feels like she doesn't get enough attention and makes it known. Summer break in the past has been stressful. This year is easier. She is content to play alone. Now, we just returned home from Kentucky so she is adjusting to home again. We finished up our first round of treatments on Friday, July 22 and left for KY that Wednesday. So maybe this is the calm before the storm.

Yes, we traveled to Lexington, KY to see Damon's sister, Sabrina. However Damon and Emily couldn't come with us and would meet up with us Saturday night. So Jack, Lizzy, and I packed the van and left Wednesday morning. Ten hours as a single parent? Would you secretly panic but say, "no sweat'? Yea, that was me. I hate posting these photos because it looks like I was taking pictures down the interstate. I snapped best I could without taking my hand or eyes off the road.....promise. Lizzy is such a little lady. Look at her with her legs crossed! Never seen this before!

These photos bring tears to my eyes. Lizzy will be 12 next month and would be turning into a beautiful young lady. Legs crossed. I do notice the seatbelt and she moves it, even when we lock it in place. She might be a bit big for a car seat. Any suggestions that would work?

She is enjoying having more vision. Her brother was annoyed with her staring at him. Hahahaha.......he just kept saying, "stop looking at me Lizzy."

I have looked at these three photos for some time and they might be my favorites. She isn't just looking at Jack, she really was staring as if she can finally see her brother! The little guy that gives her a kiss on her leg before bed, or gives her her pacifier by pulling her hair back to open her mouth. Oh, that's Jack Jack!

We stopped twice. Jack would get McDonalds, Lizzy would get KFC, and I snacked on crackers and soda. Bathroom breaks were challenging but we were thankful for handicap stalls! However, Jack needed to "sit" for a while so Lizzy entertained herself at the sink.

She loves the sound of the water and the way it feels.

Lizzy loves her Aunt Sabrina. It has been a few months since she has seen Lizzy.

We started our trip home Monday night around 9:00. Lizzy didn't sleep the ENTIRE trip. Every light, sound, or movement was more interesting than sleeping. We couldn't believe it! The other kids had no problem falling asleep. She clapped, squealed, and laughed the whole time. So Lizzy and I kept Damon awake while he drove!  We got home at 5:30 and Lizzy ate some oatmeal and crashed until 2:00!! Guess she was a bit tired!

Sorry for the break in postings. I felt like I needed a break. I'll be posting a couple times a week from now on. School starts in two weeks. It will be exciting to see how her teachers react to her. She really has changed! I thought she was loving and affectionate before but now, she really wants to show you how much she loves you! I say "Are you momma's girl?" She mauls me! So loving! So blessed.

God Bless all of you. I have missed you. Thank you for the emails and messges during my "break". I appreciate you.  Damon has started football for the season, so pray for me. I need patience and understanding parenting three children. We will have daddy back in November:-)
